how hard is it to fix something like this? is it just bond-o or is it cut and replace? What would I need for tools? could a lot of it just be ground down and patched?

If the rust is through or close to it (like on the door and probably the bottom of the fender), cut and replace. If it’s just surface (like the hatch, hopefully), clean out the rust, rust-treatment/converter/POR15, skim coat of filler, primer and paint.

As for tools, wire brush cups are great for cleaning out rusty metal, sand paper/blocks will be needed for for bondo and paint work.

Cutting and replacing will need a grinder, welder, tin snips and something to form sheet metal (a brake is good for straight bends but you can make do with a vice and hammers).

All that said, body work sucks. Shit’s hard, yo.

How hard is it to just find a better fender and hatch? I mean, they both look salvageable with limited welding, but there could always be unseen surprises lurking.

If there’s holes, patch it.

If it’s surface/medium rust, grind it down, bondo and paint.

The rear hatch looks pretty bad. I suggest you get a new one, as soon as you repair that rust, it’ll come back. Window seals.....

Passenger side doors should really be replaced. I see rust all over.

i feel like it would kinda be like patching drywall. same concepts but different materials, except welding..... I’d need to learn how to do that.

You’ll need to weld for any decent metal patch, if you’ve never welded before, get lots of practice before you try it . Welding is much harder than it looks and requires a good deal of patience and spatial awareness. Generally, where there’s one hole, there’s more where that came from and you should be aware of the paint bubbling up near where you’re patching.

IF you do buy that FJ, I suggest you get it undercoated and consult a professional for any welding.

I’ve done a fair amount of bodywork, I can try to field any questions if you’d like.

Similar concepts yes, especially on the filler/bondo work but welding and forming sheet metal is the hard part, especially on exterior parts where aesthetics matter. With welding it’s easy to burn through the thin metal and forming metal to look good in anything other than simple curves and bends is an art form.

thanks, I’d definitely want some practice. I feel like I could pick it up easy. I’m pretty good with my hands - woodwork, plastering, painting, drawing. I’m starting to feel like it would be more than I could deal with on my own

You probably could pick it up easily, it’s more of a daunting process that takes great pleasure in your suffering though. :P

It’s a bit frustrating sometimes, most of the bodywork I’ve done has been done with a 2x4, a hammer and a shit ton of bondo. I have done more serious stuff though.

Did you wind up buying that one? If so good deal!

Basic body tools for most of that would be a 110v Mig welder, a set of body hammers and dollies, body files, assorted sanding equipment (Jitterbug or DA sander), aviation tin snips, and a 3” grinder with flap disc, grinding wheel and cutoff wheels. Most of it can be had cheap from Harbor Freight and for light use it’ll last a while.

If you’re not ready to dive into bodywork just try to slow the rust down by cleaning and sealing with Por 15 or something similar.

That’s not terrible rust so there is some time before it’s terminal.

thanks you have me back into it again... i dont know if thats good or not. I’m waiting to hear back from the guy. he had a couple people look at it over the weekend so I dont know if he has it still or not.
